The “Sparrows vs Swallows” opening competitive event of the year on Good Friday attracted the largest field for many years and benefitted from benign conditions. The result was a 4-2 win for the transitory community (Swallows). Given the substantial margins of victory in their two wins, dissenting voices from the residents (Sparrows) suggested the result should be decided on a holes up basis but they were overruled by the competition secretary (who happened to be a Swallow).
The following day, the Ladies Easter Coffee morning was also well attended and raised over £400 for Alzheimer’s research, and was followed by a Stableford competition won by JA Dawson with 38 points. R Michie was second with 36 points and C Howlett third with 35.
T Saddington won the men’s competition, the Lord Walton Cup, with 40 points, ahead of M Cummins on countback with D Stout third with 39 points.
The club continued to be busy on Sunday with a packed dining room for Sunday lunch (appropriately including Lord Walton and family) and the annual match between the North Northumberland League and the County Juniors – the League won this year, by 3.5-2.5.
